But someone with GAD may agonize irrepressibly about something specific or something that she (or he) can’t pin down. The person often knows there’s no significant reason to worry but can nonetheless stifle it.

We want each patient to get the most out of life. Psychological issues can stand in the way of finding happiness and satisfaction. A psychiatrist will work with you to uncover the reasons behind the issues that are holding you back from being your best.

GAD is more than simply “a case of nerves.” It’s an acknowledged mental health condition that can make it hard to cope with life’s ups and downs, and even daily activities. Indications of GAD include insomnia, tense muscles, constant digestive problems, fatigue, shaking, a hard time concentrating, a short temper, a rapid heartbeat, and even neurological symptoms, such as numbness, tingling or prickling in various parts of the body.

A psychiatrist can treat GAD with talk and behavioral therapy, but he may decide that psychiatric medications would also be of help. SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are deemed the first-line treatment for anxiety and frequently have fewer unfavorable side effects than other medications. The brand names of the most common are Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa and Lexapro. Each has its benefits and risks.

Some can be taken on an as-needed basis, while others must be taken daily. It can take up to six weeks for some meds to take effect. Your psychiatrist will decide which med will be best for you and give you usage instructions.
